The Fowler Museum at UCLA (fowler.ucla.edu) is located on the campus of one of the world's leading research universities. Its focus is on global arts and cultures with an emphasis on Africa, Asia, the Pacific, and the Americas. With a strong foundation in historical arts from these regions, the Fowler believes that cultures are always on the move. Thus, programming also features the work of international contemporary artists presented within the complex frameworks of politics, culture, and social action. Established in 1963 and widely known for its extensive collections and ambitious exhibitions and programs, it serves diverse community and campus audiences. The Museum is part of UCLA's School of the Arts and Architecture and regularly collaborates with faculty and students across campus, the Center for the Art of Performance, and Hammer Museum as well as other Los Angeles arts and cultural institutions.

Position Summary:
The Director of Development (DOD) reports to, the Museum Director and is responsible for coordinating and leading all activity related to seeking philanthropic support for the Fowler Museum including funding for exhibitions and programs, and opportunities for major and legacy gifts that can support the future growth of the Museum and its endowment.

Primary Responsibilities:
The DOD will be responsible for creating and activating short- and long-term plans and robust strategies for individual, corporate and foundation fundraising, with particular emphasis on the expansion of the individual major gift effort aimed at achieving those objectives. The DOD will also reinvigorate a focused effort on Museum membership and all donor engagement strategies that include exhibition openings, stewardship, and events to recognize the generosity of patrons and members. They will also identify, qualify, cultivate, and solicit prospective donors who have the capacity to make financial commitments of $25,000+ and deliver timely and effective follow-up to prospects and donors.
Working with the Museum Director and senior staff, the DOD will help to establish and manage a volunteer board as a means for achieving important fundraising goals. In addition, the DOD will oversee the management of volunteer special interest councils and arrange opportunities for the Museum Director and other staff as appropriate to meet with donors and volunteers in forums designed to engender increased interest in and support of the Museum.
The DOD also works closely with External Affairs partners, especially the Executive Director of Development for the School of Arts and Architecture and the School's team of development professionals. They will manage a major gift prospect portfolio with goals for solicitations and dollars raised and will prioritize the Museum Director's portfolio and staff the director's prospect work. This position also oversees the preparation of all aspects of grant applications and proposals and ensures timely reporting as appropriate.
The DOD manages an Assistant Director of Development and a Grant Manager. They work collaboratively with Museum curators, communications team, and events staff to ensure that the Fowler Museum reaches its strategic and fundraising goals.

Required/Preferred

Working knowledge and experience in the principles and practices of development and fundraising.

Required

Five or more years of experience is required including working with not-for-profit institutions and their boards, preferably with museums and/or colleges and universities.

Required

Demonstrated ability to conceptualize and implement identification, cultivation, and solicitation strategies for individual, corporate, and foundation prospects.

Required

Proven ability to communicate effectively and persuasively both in person and in writing.

Required

Familiarity with art history and trends in global arts and cultural programming within public arts institutions and knowledge of Los Angeles philanthropic community.

Required

Excellent writing skills, with demonstrated ability to conceive and produce business correspondence, solicitation materials, letters of acknowledgment, proposals to individuals, corporations, and foundations, grant applications and interim and final reports.

Required

Skill in organizing material, information and people to optimize efficiency.

Required

The ability to command respect and trust among board, staff, peers and potential funders is essential.

Ability to represent the museum to donors, foundation and corporate executives, artists, and museum members.
